What to do when your support systems fail

With a complete set of contingency plans in place, system failures should no longer be an issue

Maintain off-site backups

Ideally, you would want to have multiple backups in place. This means backing up documents, essential files and your critical databases. There are a number of backup solutions to choose from too, which means the task of maintaining multiple backups will not be a complicated one to handle.

You can resume business operations in just a few minutes. Search for Network-Attached Storage or NAS and use reliable hard drives if you want to integrate offline backups into your backup routine.

Disaster recovery plan

The next part of the plan involves dealing with disasters. When one of your main systems fails due to a hardware failure, you need to know exactly what to do. The goal is to restore business operations as quickly as possible. There are a few things you can do to have a good disaster recovery plan in place.

First, make sure there is at least one replacement hardware available. If you’re running business systems from the cloud, it is a good idea to have an extra droplet or a backup account ready for use at all times. You can switch to the working hardware immediately, even under the worst circumstances.

Next, make sure you know which backup is the most up to date. There will be times when you can’t restore everything immediately; there is nothing wrong with restoring only the critical parts of the system first.

Data recovery

To complete your contingency plans, make sure you have a solution for data recovery in place. Most of today’s data recovery software can handle basic file recovery, so documents and other files should not be difficult to recover.

For more advanced needs, you will have to consult an expert. When you need to do a complete SQL database recovery, for example, having a team of experienced technicians is always the best way to go. You stand a better chance of getting all of your data back when the recovery is done properly.
