About 200 people gathered at City Hall Monday morning to protest property tax hikes that they say would be devastating to small businesses in the city. The rally was organized by a group called, I Heart YYC Small Biz.

The protestors want Calgary city council to cut business property taxes. Council is now meeting to debate a plan that could cut taxes for many business properties.

Thousands of businesses are getting tax bills with major increases as a result of a sharp decline in taxes coming from the downtown core, where office vacancies remain high.

One option on the table is from Coun. Shane Keating. He has proposed giving businesses $71 million in rebates and cut city spending by $60 million.
