Michael Culbert has been announced as the 2019 Distinguished Business Leader Award recipient. The award recognizes ethical leadership and is presented by the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business and the Calgary Chamber.
The award, which began in 1993, will be presented to Culbert, vice-chairman of PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd., at a June 19 gala.
“It is a great honour to be selected as the 2019 Distinguished Business Leader,” said Culbert in a news release. “With today’s bombardment of 24-hour news, the need for encouragement and acknowledgement of ethical leadership may never have been more important.
“Ethical leadership starts with the tone from the top. … Be honest and be able to hold your head high. Be proud of decisions you have made and be proud of the company’s decisions.”
Jim Dewald, dean of the Haskayne School of Business, said leaders look forward and seize opportunity.
“Ethical leaders do this while developing strong relationships along the way. Michael Culbert is an exceptional leader who has moved the energy industry forward while developing relationships with indigenous communities, regulatory bodies and at the political level,” he said.
Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships of the gala dinner, held at the Hyatt Regency, fund an annual scholarship for an undergraduate at the Haskayne School of Business as well as the Emerging Entrepreneur scholarship through the Calgary Chamber. Calgary Foundation is a gala partner.
“To create long-standing trust, business leaders must ensure integrity, morality and ethics are baked into every transaction they have with a client, a stakeholder a colleague or an employee,” said Sandip Lalli, president and CEO of the Calgary Chamber.
“Throughout his career Michael has reached the highest level of corporate leadership by exhibiting these qualities every day. He is a tireless advocate for the city, for community and a very deserved recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Business Leader Award.”
