In the competitive and noisy world of automobile sales and service, how do you stand out? Precision Hyundai has a simple answer.
The secret ingredient has been a standalone, family owned and operated business that has advocated family values — respect, communication and transparency — throughout the dealership from Day 1. Now celebrating 35 years in business and many awards along the way, Precision Hyundai has grown from a tiny dealership on Macleod Trail to a state-of-the art facility in the Calgary Auto Mall.
Many customers and employees have been with Precision, the only family owned and operated Hyundai dealership in Calgary, for more than three decades.
Some customers say they make the trip to its location for sales and service, even though there are other Hyundai locations closer to home. And they go on to say it’s because of way they have been treated over the years, first by John Robinson, founder and partner and now by his two sons, Andrew Robinson, now the general manager and partner, and Sean Robinson, the service manager and, of course, the staff.
Some even bring in other makes of vehicles to be serviced because they wouldn’t trust anyone else to work on their cars.
Employees stay for the same reason. The Robinsons have created a working environment where staff feel they are part of a family — an experience they haven’t had elsewhere. One of the staff, George Brown, has 40 years in the industry, 33 of them with Precision.
“We have employees who’ve been with us for over 30 years because it’s a great place to work,” says John Robinson, Precision Hyundai’s founder and principal dealer. “We’ve built strong relationships with them – that carry over into the experience our customers have when they come into buy a vehicle or for maintenance.
“Some of our customers have also been with us from the beginning. We’re proud to be celebrating 35 years, and it’s been a privilege and an honour to serve Calgarians.”
Andrew Robinson is committed to carrying on the family legacy.
“It’s been a privilege to have learned the business under my father. And now, after managing the dealership for many years, I’ve come to appreciate all the sacrifices he made and the hard work that was put into making Precision Hyundai what it is today,” Andrew says.
The Robinson family supports the Calgary community. Andrew was the 2017-2018 chairman of the Motor Dealer Association of Alberta, is the past-president of the Calgary Motor Dealers Association and a board member of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association.
The family and the dealership have also been long-time community supporters of Calgary organizations. including Kids Cancer Care, the Calgary Food Bank, Autism Awareness and many others. The store was also involved in the 2019 annual Calgary International Auto and Truck Show and the accompanying Vehicles & Violins Gala.
Precision’s management made a conscious decision to ensure women are employed in each of its departments, including its service and sales departments.
“There are many female customers who prefer to deal with other women,” says Andrew Robinson. “So we made hiring decisions to ensure they could deal with another woman through each step of the buying process and later on, when they bring their vehicle in for maintenance.”
Precision was the first Hyundai dealership in western Canada, and the fourth nationally after the brand arrived in Canada in December 1983. In the 35 years it’s been in business, the dealership has gone on to win many awards. In fact, it has sold more Hyundais than any other dealer in western Canada.
One of its long-time sales consultants, Dusty O’Neill, who has been with Precision Hyundai for 25 years, was the 2018 recipient of the Hyundai Canada Provincial and National Customer Experience Champion Award.
One of the brand’s newest innovations, the Kona compact SUV, was also the 2018 Winner of the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The demand is so high, many Hyundai locations are struggling to meet demand.
“We recently made a large investment in the dealership by undergoing a significant renovation because we feel Hyundai as a brand has an incredibly bright future,” says Andrew Robinson. “We wanted to be able to position ourselves to be a part of that success.
“The Hyundai brand is making big advancements in its technology. It’s opening up into segments where we haven’t gone before with electric vehicles, multi-hybrid options on current models, large SUVs and a pickup truck.
“We’re proud to be associated with an innovative organization that is also environmentally responsible with both design and technology.”
