Why Toronto Is The Perfect City Break

When travelling to Canada, people are often drawn to the natural wonders, yet Canada is home to some of the most exciting and vibrant cities.

Toronto is a culturally diverse and modern metropolitan city, famous for being a hub for food, arts, culture and entertainment in Canada. With each neighbourhood offering culture and culinary experience, it doesn’t whether you stay in West Queen St. West, Yorksville, Leslieville, Kensington Market or the Entertainment District. Food & Drink

In the east of the city are beautifully restored Victorian-era buildings called the Distillery District. It gets the name from its days as the base of the Gooderham & Worts whisky distillery, which was the largest distillery in the world in the 1860s. The Distillery District has since been turned into a foodies dream with cafes, restaurants as well as a hub for studios and shops.

Visit The WaterFront

Toronto is one of the few major cities on the waterfront. To check out some of the most beautiful sights of the city head down to the waterfront. Stretching from the Rouge River in the east to the Etobicoke Creek in the west, the waterfront allows for 28 miles of walking along Lake Ontario.

Markets

While you can get lost walking aimlessly along the waterfront, there is quite a lot you can do, take a break on one of the many beaches or visit St Lawrence Market, a Toronto icon. Open Saturdays and running since 1803, it was named the best food market in the world by National Geographic.

Kensington Market is a must-do when visiting Toronto. Recognised as a National Historic Site of Canada it is as much a market as it is a cool, multicultural neighbourhood to explore. Kensington Market is perfect for vintage shopping, viewing some street art, and finding über-cool hipster coffee shops in the city.

There’s a good selection of places to eat, with a mixture of cultures and cuisines, with stalls and eateries selling tasty dishes from all around the world. As well as an abundance of bars to have a drink, everything from rooftop, hidden and live music bars, it’s worth spending your time taking everything in.

Art

While there is lots of street art all over Toronto, dedicated areas for some really awesome mural walls and street art. One of the ones to check out is Graffiti Alley, in Toronto’s Fashion District. Graffiti Alley runs west from Spadina Ave. to Portland St with some vibrant, creative walls here that are worth the visit.

Culture

A visit to Toronto’s castle, Casa Loma, is a must. Built between 1911-1914, Casa Loma took three years and $3.5 million to build, originally a massive residence for a financier named Sir Henry Mill Pellatt and Lady Mary Pellatt. Today, this Gothic Revival style castle is home to a museum, garden and stables area. Get lost in its 98 rooms, secret passageways, and towers.

Museums

The Royal Ontario Museum is Canada’s largest museum, it was originally five separate museums so it covers a diverse range of subjects. With over six million objects and 40 galleries, it features everything from world cultures to art, archaeology to natural history.

Sport

Canadians are known for their love of hockey and Toronto is no different, home to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Situated in Old Toronto is the museum that is great for all things hockey, learn about the players, a large collection of hockey memorabilia. Toronto Islands

You can escape the city for a few hours on a boat trip to the Toronto Islands. A mixture of nature reserves, beaches and boat clubs. This group of 15 islands is only 100 metres offshore at its closest point but makes for a relaxed waterside escape from the city.

Niagara Falls

While technically, Niagara Falls is in the city of Toronto. You can’t come to Toronto, without visiting one of the greatest natural wonders in the world. In just over 90 minutes in the car, you will arrive at the falls, where you can easily spend the day hiking, taking in the sights as well as exploring the surrounding area.
