It’s back to basics with Acer’s new smartphones

Unlocked Liquid smartphones flowing into Canada

EDMONTON, AB, Jun 3, 2014/ Troy Media/ – Three of Acer America’s latest unlocked Android-powered smart phones are not made of water, but they are called Liquid. This aqua-named trio marks the return of Acer to the Canadian market after a long absence.

“We’re excited to expand our global smartphone presence by delivering several of our new unlocked Liquid smartphone models to potential customers in Canada,” said Hugo Hernandez, vice president, Acer America Smartphone Business Group.

Acer Liquid S1 – Pro

The biggest of the three is the Acer Liquid S1. It features a large 5.7 inch TFT HD LCD display (1280 x 760), a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, an eight-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a two-megapixel front camera with f2.2 autofocus. It also has a built-in GPS and DTS studio sound that offer crystal clear audio. The large capacity battery offers up to 17 hours talk time in 2G and 11 hours in 3G. The Acer Liquid S1 measures 6.4″ x 3.2″ x 0.4″ and weighs 0.4 pounds. It’s available in black only and retails for $379.99.

Acer Liquid Z5 – Slim & Light

The stylish and lighter Liquid Z5 has a slightly smaller 5 inch TFT LCD screen with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. It has a dual core 1.3 GHz processor, a rear-facing five-megapixel camera with f2 .4 autofocus and also has an LED flash, an IR-filter along with HDR support.

The Liquid Z5 features Acer’s proprietary AcerRapid that acts as a personal control key making it easier to access a number of the functions including screen wake up, taking pictures, launching apps, and grabbing calls – all with one hand.

There’s a trade-off between mass and battery life. At 7.5 hours in 2G and just over four hours in 3G, the Z5 offers less than half the talk time of the Liquid S1 coming in. It measures 5.7” x 2.9” x 5.3” and weighs 0.3 pounds. It comes in two colors – white and grey – and features a UV finish to protect from scratches. The Acer Liquid Z5 has a much lighter price tag than the S1 coming in at $199.99.

Acer Liquid Z3 – Back to Basics

While more manufacturers are coming out with bigger screens and incorporating more advanced technology, Liquid Z3 simply gets back to basics. It’s ideal for someone on a very tight budget or for those who can no longer avoid getting into the smartphone game. The Liquid Z3has a 3.5 inch HVGA (320 x 480) TFT LCD display, a 1 GHz dual core processor and a single three-megapixel front-facing camera. It measures just 4.3” x 2.4” x 0.4″ and weighs the same as the Z5 at 0.3 pounds. The beauty of this smartphone is its price, which is $119.99 but offered only in black.

All three new Acer Liquid smart phones ship with Android Jellybean 4.2.2 and should be available in stores starting today. They can be used with wireless networks that support the HSPA+ 850/1900 MHz frequencies, i.e. 3G, which would include almost all carriers in Canada with the exception of Mobilicity and Wind Mobile.

“We’re certain that customers in Canada will appreciate that Acer’s Liquid series smartphones look as good as they perform and aren’t locked into any one wireless carrier or plan, providing customers with more options. They are sleek and intuitive, combining appealing aesthetics; comfortable ergonomics and practical features that help users manage and make the most of their personal and professional life.”

While each of the models seem to appeal to a different market, it should be interesting to see how well the Acer Liquid Smartphones fare in the Canadian market, especially given that none of these phones support the faster 4G LTE. They’ll also face tough competition from the $179 Motorola Moto-E and the 4G-LTE $249 Moto-G that are scheduled for release in the next few weeks.
