Top 5 Green Bay Packers Quarterbacks of All Time

Apr 8, 2022

The Green Bay Packers are one of the most popular and successful NFL franchises of all time.

With a massive stadium, very supportive fans, great facilities, and top coaches, the Packers have it all.

Anyone who has followed the NFL knows that even teams that backed these coaches, as the Packers did, still needed talented players to go all the way. Teams that win Championships and Super Bowls are the ones with great quarterbacks and usually, they have the highest score on many online sportsbooks.

Arguably the most important position in the NFL, the quarterback is responsible for running plays on the offense and throwing the ball to their teammates to score touchdowns.

Blessed with some of the best QBs to ever play the game, ranking the Packers’ top quarterbacks is not easy.

Below is a rundown of the five best quarterbacks who have put on the Green Bay Packers uniform.

1. Bart Starr

The present generation of Green Bay Packers fans may not be too familiar with the name Bart Starr, even though he is a huge part of the team’s folklore. Starr was one of the most accurate passers you would see in the NFL, especially during his era.

People may look at the statistics and suggest that Starr does not match up to the great modern QBs. That may be true, but we have to remember that quarterbacks were not the ones who had the ball in their hands all the time during Starr’s era.

The NFL was very much a “run first” league during those years. But when Starr did get the ball, his throws were accurate and sharp. That is why he won the NFL five times, leading the Packers to wins in Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II. He was also MVP in each of those games.

2. Brett Favre

One of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game, Brett Favre is still remembered as a legend in Green Bay. A devastating passer of the football, Favre won three MVP trophies during his time as a player. In addition, he made the Pro Bowl 11 times.

Favre is up there in terms of passing yards and touchdowns with any Packers quarterback. The next player on this list, Aaron Rodgers, only recently passed him in these records.

Many fans believe Favre is the greatest Packers quarterback of all time, but one fact puts him below Bart Starr; Favre only won one Super Bowl ring during his time as a Packer. He led the team to Super Bowl XXXI, winning against the New England Patriots.

Having spent more than a decade with the Green Bay Packers, fans will always remember Brett Favre with adoration and respect. His time on the team may not have ended harmoniously, but most people choose to remember the great years he gave the team.

3. Aaron Rodgers

Is there a record that Aaron Rodgers has not broken in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers? Aside from Tom Brady, Rodgers is the definitive quarterback of his generation. With the talent to match anyone in the league, Rodgers often bails his team out of difficult situations with some sensational throws from the QB position.

There is no other NFL player in history who managed to achieve 4,000 passing yards in each of his first two years as a starter in the league. Rodgers is a special quarterback who is constantly one-upping his own greatness with another terrific performance.

Much like Favre, there is one blot on Rodgers’ record, and that is his success in the playoffs. Rodgers has only managed to win one Super Bowl with the Packers, which came during Super Bowl XLV when he was also the game’s MVP.

4. Arnie Herber

Another name that may not resonate with the modern football fan. Arnie Herber was a great player in the 1920s and 1930s. Herber started as a tailback before he switched over to quarterback.

As a QB, Herber was one of the best in the league during his time. He was a top passer, throwing for nine touchdowns and over 600 yards in the 1932 season. His best season came in 1935 when he got to play with wide receiver Don Hutson.

During the 1936 NFL season, Hutson and Herber were an unstoppable duo, with the Packers going 10-0-1 and winning the NFL title by defeating the Boston Redskins 21-6. Herber eventually got a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, getting his induction in 1966.

5. Don Majkowski

When you are up against so many great quarterbacks who have passing records or multiple Super Bowl rings, it is difficult to compete. Don Majkowski, however, was a great Green Bay Packers quarterback in his own right.

He joined the team in 1987 as a 10th round draft pick from the NFL Draft. Eventually, he found his way into a starting spot, getting the nod in the 1989 season. Majkowski went on to throw 27 touchdowns and over 4,000 passing yards, helping the team to an impressive 10-6 record.

Unfortunately, his peak did not last long, with Majkowski suffering a rotator cuff injury in the 1990 season, and he was never the same player again. He is still one of their best-ranking passers of all time, but injuries robbed him of a higher spot on this list.

Cementing a Legacy

Among this list of quarterbacks who have played for the Packers, only one is still active. Aaron Rodgers may be in the twilight of his career, but he is showing very few signs of slowing down.

Rodgers wants to win more Super Bowl rings, and he wants to make or break every possible QB record that he can manage in the NFL before he retires.

There may still be a debate as to whether Rodgers is the best Packers QB of all time, but such a debate will cease by the time he retires. Aaron Rodgers will deliver even more success for the Packers in the NFL, and he will go down as one of the best to ever play in the league when he calls it a day.
