Cybercrime or cyberattack is an activity that targets a computer, a computer network, or a networked device to take control over the device or infect the device with malware. Cyberattacks are committed usually by cybercriminals with the intent of making money. Keeping your software and operating system updated all the time is important. Previous versions of software and operating systems can have different security bugs and vulnerabilities that can be exploited by the attackers and as a result, they can gain control over your device or get entry into your device.

Therefore, it is recommended that you always keep all your programs, software, and operating system up to date to ensure that the bugs are patched and you are using the latest security patches that will protect your computer. Along with this, visit the default gateway address i.e 192.168.100.1, and update the firmware of your WiFi router as hackers can gain access through your WiFi router too. For portable and travel routers, you can use 10.0.0.1 as the default gateway address.

Using an antivirus program will also keep your PC protected against cyberthreats. Antivirus programs scan, detect, and remove threats from your PC before they can become a problem and can cause a malfunction in your PC. Having a credible antivirus program like Avast, McAfee, or Kaspersky installed makes sure that your computer and your data are secure and protected from different cyberattacks.

If you are using an antivirus program then just like your operating system, ensure that you are using the latest and updated version to get the best level of protection against cyberattacks.

3. Use Strong Passwords

Always try to use strong passwords that are hard to guess by both people and software. Most people make a common mistake that they use weak passwords and commonly used passwords that can be easily guessed by anyone and hence they can gain access to your email, social accounts, or bank accounts.

Be sure that you use a strong password that people cannot guess or if you cannot come with up a strong password then you can take help from a password manager that will help you to generate a strong password and store them in a secure place for you.

4. Avoid Opening Malicious Email Attachments

One of the classic and most commonly used methods by which hackers gain entry to your computer or infect your computer with malware is through email attachments in spam emails. Spam emails have become a common thing and most email providers now have a spam filter in place that blocks most spam emails but if you ever receive an email that contains an attachment and you don’t know the sender then never open such an attachment because these attachments usually contain malware that can infect your computer.

5. Avoid Opening Malicious Links

Along with email attachments, there is also another way people get infected by malware through emails and that is by malicious links. Apart from email attachments, cyberattackers insert malicious links in spam emails or in other messages, or on unfamiliar websites. So, if you want to stay safe online then you should avoid opening any suspicious link or untrusted website.

6. Don’t Share Your Personal Information Unless You’re Completely Sure

Never ever give out your personal information to anyone unless you are completely sure that the line or email through which you are sharing your personal information is secure and the person you are speaking to is the person who you think he/she is. Sometimes, people may pretend to be from your bank or any other company and ask you for your personal information or OTP (One Time Password).

You should never share such information unless you’re completely and if you get asked for data from your bank or any company then you should contact the relevant company/bank directly on their official helpline number to ensure that you are speaking to the right people and not cybercriminals.

These were some of the top tips that can keep you protected against cyberthreats and cybercriminals. While on the internet, always be mindful that you never share any private or sensitive information with anyone and don’t open anything that looks suspicious.
